Is BioWave Different than TENS?
Yes. Unlike TENS units, which only mask pain at the skin’s surface, BioWave uses patented high-frequency therapeutic signals that travel deep into the body to directly target pain nerves. BioWave works similar to how Novocain works, except BioWave blocks the transmisison of pain signals at their source, electrically rather than chemically. As a result, BioWave delivers a greater magnitude of relief that can last for many hours after a single 30-minute treatment.
Because BioWave blocks the pain signal inside the body right at the pain nerve, patients often experience improved mobility without needing to keep the device on continuously (which is often the case with TENS). Is BioWave a TENS unit?
No. BioWave is not TENS. TENS devices use low-frequency electrical signals that cannot pass through the skin due to skin impedance. As a result, TENS only creates a surface-level sensation that may temporarily distract from pain, but the relief typically stops as soon as the device is turned off.

Is BioWave Just Masking The Pain Or Is It Providing A Healing Effect?
In addition to blocking the pain signal, BioWave can help reduce inflammation because there is increased blood flow in the region being treated beneath and surrounding each electrode. Increased blood flow results not from vasodilation, rather components of blood have a charge associated with them and when a charged particle enters an electrical field it is accelerated through the field. The increased blood flow can help reduce inflammation and increase the rate of healing with multiple treatments over time if a particular pain condition can benefit from the increased blood flow. However, if pain is resulting from a structural issue like osteoarthritis, the BioWave electrical field is not going to regrow cartilage and may have no healing effect on the joint but can still be beneficial in terms of managing pain, increasing range of motion, and reducing stiffness.

Can I Use BioWave With A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?
Yes, BioWave can be used on patients with pre-existing medical conditions. BioWave treatments can be performed directly over locations of the body that have implanted orthopedic hardware like total joints, anchors, screws or pins, rods, or plates. However, BioWave cannot be used (is contraindicated) for patients with implanted pacemakers and defibrillators. How often can I do treatments?
You can use BioWave as often as needed, based on your individual pain levels and the relief you experience. It is recommended to allow at least 30 minutes between treatments to allow your body to reset before starting a new session in the exact same location. There is no limit to the number of treatments if additional relief is needed.
If you plan to treat a different body area, it is not necessary to wait 30 minutes between treatments. You can immediately begin another treatment on a different part of the body.

Do electrodes come with the purchase of a BioWaveGO unit? If yes, how many pairs are included?
Yes. BioWaveGO includes electrodes. Each BioWaveGO unit comes with one bag containing three sets (3 pairs) of 2″ diameter round electrodes.
How long should I charge my BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO unit?
To keep the battery in good condition, charge your BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO at least once per week overnight.
How many treatments can I do on a fully charged BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO unit?
A fully charged BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO unit supports up to four 30-minute treatments per charge.
Do I need a doctor’s prescription to purchase BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO?
BioWaveHOME requires a prescription. BioWaveGO is available either with a prescription or over the counter through Amazon.
Will my insurance/Medicare cover the cost of purchasing BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO?
Commercial insurance and Medicare typically do not cover BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO. That said, many customers still choose BioWave because it offers a drug-free option for pain relief at home. Since coverage can vary by plan, we recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm your specific benefits.
Where can I buy more electrodes or accessories for BioWaveHOME or BioWaveGO?
If your BioWave device was prescribed by your doctor through a VA hospital, please contact your VA provider or clinic for additional electrodes or accessories. If you purchased an over-the-counter BioWaveGO unit, replacement electrodes and accessories are available through our Amazon store. Are there contraindications? (When not to use a BioWave device)
Contraindications
- DO NOT USE on patients with a cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator as the stimulator may interfere with its function.
- DO NOT USE any electrodes over the heart or across the thoracic volume. Electrodes can be applied to the back of the thorax and lateral aspect of the upper limb (i.e. below/down the shoulder).
- DO NOT PLACE the electrodes on the front or side of the neck.
- DO NOT PLACE electrodes on top of the head.
- DO NOT USE on patients prone to seizure (for example, epileptics).
- DO NOT PLACE electrodes and DO NOT USE the stimulator over open wounds, broken skin, rashy skin or sensitive skin areas (e.g. sunburned skin).
Warnings
- Electrodes must never touch each other
– Minimum Spacing Between Electrodes = 1 inch
– No Maximum Spacing Between Electrodes - Do NOT use electrodes if:
– The metal portion of the wire is exposed; or
– The gel has peeled apart from the black carbon surface; or
– The surface of the hydrogel is worn down - Pregnancy – BioWave CAN BE USED on pregnant patients. Anecdotal evidence suggests BioWave may be helpful with back and hip pain in pregnant patients. However, PADS CANNOT BE PLACED over the belly of a pregnant patient. Patients should consult with their physician regarding use of BioWave during pregnancy & labor. See BioWave’s protocol for use during pregnancy.
- Cancer – BioWave CAN BE USED on patients with cancer. Please consult with your physician prior to use.
BioWave MAY be used for the following:
- BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED on patients with implanted drug pumps, spinal cord stimulators, peripheral nerve stimulators or other implanted electrical stimulation devices. Implanted electrical stimulation devices should first be turned off remotely before using BioWave.
- Electrodes MAY BE PLACED on the back of the neck and bioccipitally on the back of the skull.
- BioWave electrodes MAY BE PLACED and BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED over scar tissue, tattoos or any other intact skin area.
- BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED to treat over body locations that have implanted orthopedic hardware made from metal or other materials including total joint replacements, pins, screws, plates, rods, and anchors.
What cable can I use for BioWaveHOME and GO?
Use the BioWave Leadwire Cable and Dongle with BioWaveHOME, and just the BioWave Leadwire Cable with BioWaveGO. Replacement BioWave Leadwire Cables are sold separately.
How to properly remove the PRO cable from the unit?
Use your thumb and index finger to hold the barrel of the cable connector and pull it straight back to release it from the female port in the PRO UNIT. NEVER twist the barrel of the connector at the single end of the cable.
Can the same electrodes be used on multiple patients?
No. Electrodes are intended for single-patient use only and should not be shared between patients for hygiene and safety reasons.
Does BioWave help with insurance or reimbursement?
At this time, BioWave does not assist with insurance or reimbursement submissions. However, we are always happy to answer questions about our products and help you understand your purchase options.
Can a chiropractor perform BioWavePENS treatment?
Yes, as long as a physician (MD or DO) is present in the facility.
Can the percutaneous electrodes be reused?
No. BioWave percutaneous electrodes are sterile and single-use. They must be used on one patient for a single treatment and then disposed of in a sharps disposal bin.
What insurance plans cover BioWavePENS treatments? Does Medicare cover it?
BioWavePENS is commonly covered under plans such as Workers’ Compensation, Personal Injury, and Auto insurance. We recommend checking with the specific insurer to confirm coverage details.
Can a medical assistant (MA) place the electrodes on the patient? Does the doctor need to be present?
Yes, as long as a physician (MD or DO) is present in the facility.
Which devices can BioWraps be used with?
BioWave Silver BioWraps, including the Back, Knee, Hand-Wrist, Thigh-Calf, Foot-Ankle, and Migraine BioWraps are compatible with BioWaveHOME and BioWavePRO devices. BioWraps do not work with BioWaveGO.
Can BioWave be used during pregnancy?

How do I know when the BioWaveHOME unit is charging or fully charged?
When the BioWaveHOME unit is charging, the blue charging light will be on. Once the unit is fully charged, the blue charging light will turn off.
How long does it take to fully charge BioWaveHOME unit?
BioWaveHOME typically takes about 5 hours to charge. To help keep the battery healthy over time, we recommend doing an overnight charge once per week. Pick a consistent day each week (for example, Sunday night) so it becomes part of your routine.
What should I use (or avoid) when cleaning my skin before a BioWave treatment?
To prep your skin for a BioWave treatment, use a damp washcloth to clean the area. Avoid harsh soaps or wipes, as the skin should be exfoliated and free of residue to help reduce impedance and maximize the benefit of the treatment.
Why won’t my BioWaveHOME unit turn on?
Make sure the charger is unplugged before pressing the power button. If the unit still does not turn on, the battery may need to be charged.

- DO NOT PLACE electrodes and DO NOT USE the stimulator over open wounds, broken skin, rashy skin or sensitive skin areas (e.g. sunburned skin).

– Minimum Spacing Between Electrodes = 1 inch
– No Maximum Spacing Between Electrodes - Do NOT use electrodes if:
– The metal portion of the wire is exposed; or
– The gel has peeled apart from the black carbon surface; or
– The surface of the hydrogel is worn down - Pregnancy – BioWave CAN BE USED on pregnant patients. Anecdotal evidence suggests BioWave may be helpful with back and hip pain in pregnant patients. However, PADS CANNOT BE PLACED over the belly of a pregnant patient. Patients should consult with their physician regarding use of BioWave during pregnancy & labor. See BioWave’s protocol for use during pregnancy.
- Cancer – BioWave CAN BE USED on patients with cancer. Please consult with your physician prior to use.
BioWave MAY be used for the following:
- BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED on patients with implanted drug pumps, spinal cord stimulators, peripheral nerve stimulators or other implanted electrical stimulation devices. Implanted electrical stumilation devices should first be turned off remotely before using BioWave.
- Electrodes MAY BE PLACED on the back of the neck and bioccipitally on the back of the skull.
- BioWave electrodes MAY BE PLACED and BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED over scar tissue, tattoos or any other intact skin area.
- BioWave stimulators MAY BE USED to treat over body locations that have implanted orthopedic hardware made from metal or other materials including total joint replacements, pins, screws,plates, rods, and anchors.

How long does a pair of electrodes last?
Electrode pads can typically be reused 8 to 10 times. Replace them when they are no longer tacky or do not adhere well.
Do not use electrodes if:
The metal portion of the wire is exposed.
The gel has peeled away from the black carbon surface.
The hydrogel surface is worn down.
Where should I place the pads?
Pad placement depends on the area you are treating, but in general, pads should be placed over the area where you are experiencing pain. Always follow the suggested pad placement instructions and photos provided in the Quick Reference Guide with your device. You can also visit our website to view recommended pad placements for different pain conditions and locations to help ensure effective and comfortable treatment.

Why is my BioWaveHOME unit flashing?
If there is a connection error, an icon on the LCD display will indicate the error between 2 connection points with a flashing arrow.
Why is my BioWaveGO unit flashing?
If there is a connection error, the LED bar graph on the face of the device will flash orange. Check the cable is properly plugged into the device, the other ends of the cable are properly plugged into the 2 electrodes, and make sure the electrodes are tacky and securely attached to the skin. If you have checked and/or corrected these 3 connections and still experience flashing orange lights, then please contact our Customer Support team at support@biowave.com or call 1-877-BIOWAVE (1-877-246-9283).
