Yes, BioWave is superior to TENS because BioWave blocks the pain signal at pain nerves in deep tissue. TENS just acts as a distraction at the surface of the skin.

Is BioWave a TENS unit?

BioWave is not TENS. TENS low-frequency signals cannot pass through skin because of the skin’s impedance. As a result, TENS creates a sensation at the surface of skin which MAY act as a distraction to the patient’s pain. When the TENS signal is removed, there is little residual benefit to the patient.

In addition to blocking the pain signal, BioWave can help reduce inflammation because there is increased blood flow in the region being treated beneath and surrounding each electrode.  Increased blood flow results not from vasodilation, rather components of blood have a charge associated with them and when a charged particle enters an electrical field it is accelerated through the field. The increased blood flow can help reduce inflammation and increase the rate of healing with multiple treatments over time if a particular pain condition can benefit from the increased blood flow. However, if pain is resulting from a structural issue like osteoarthritis, the BioWave electrical field is not going to regrow cartilage and may have no healing effect on the joint but can still be beneficial in terms of managing pain, increasing range of motion, and reducing stiffness.

Yes, BioWave can be used on patients with pre-existing medical conditions.  BioWave treatments can be performed directly over locations of the body that have implanted orthopedic hardware like total joints, plates, anchors, screws or pins, rods, or plates. However, BioWave cannot be used (is contraindicated) for patients with implanted pacemakers and defibrillators. BioWaveGO (both OTC and Rx versions) is a much smaller, wearable version of our prescription BioWaveHOME and BioWavePRO neurostimulators with less frequency. BioWaveGO utilizes the same patented technology that’s been prescribed to over 500 professional athletes and used by over 100 pro sports teams and over 150 college teams, but is not as strong as our larger units. The device is simple to use – there’s no programming – it has a power button and a PLUS and MINUS button to control intensity. The device has a multicolor LED bar graph to indicate the status of the device. The treatment is comfortable – it feels like a deep, smooth sensation so patient compliance is excellent. BioWaveGO is also Bluetooth enabled and can be controlled via an easy to use app on a smartphone.
